Day 1. Landing and walking around Lisbon.

In Dubai, we landed after the 14 hour flight to discover our next flight was undergoing its final call. We boarded and did the next 8 hours straight away.

Flying into Lisbon

Landing in Portugal at 12:30PM on 3 April 2023, we walked straight past baggage claim (didn’t have any), and caught the metro into town.

After I guided us to get off at the wrong train station, we got to walk to our Hostel, passing alley ways and Campo dos Mártires da Pátria.

We checked into our hotel Lisbon Angels Hostel. Our booking here was for 2 nights costing a total of $155.25AUD. Included balcony. Well within budget. Shared bathroom though.

We laid down for an hour. Having not done that for a few days. Then set off to find castles. Entrance fee of 15€

Castelo de S. Jorge

While on the castle walls we imagined sail ships from olden times trading at the docks below. We also imagined what a siege would look like from the castle we were in.

I learnt that some of the fortifications date back to 1st century BC. It had been occupied successively by Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, and Moors, before its conquest by the Portuguese in the 1147 Siege of Lisbon.

After the Castelo de S. Jorge, we then headed to the Lisbon Cathedral. Mitchell found this amazing because of the power the church must have held. No photos allowed inside.

Then to buy a famous custard tart called Pastéis de nata on our way to Arco da Rua Augusta.

Pastéis de nata

We walked in the direction of our Hostel having a burrito for dinner. When arriving back at the hostel I instantly fell asleep. I now write this at 5am unable to sleep.

This blog has been offline for a day. My Grandma has diagnosed and expertly solved my home internet issues to get this back online.
